Hand-Crafted Sea Glass Jewelry & Gifts

Sea glass is a beautiful gift from the Bay -- the ultimate trash to treasure.  I create one-of-a-kind sea glass jewelry and collect the sea glass in Maryland.  All tumbling is courtesy of the Chesapeake Bay and the Northeast River.

About My Sea Glass

 St. Mary's County
Chesapeake Bay Sea Glass

Frosted Chesapeake Sea Glass
Frosted, colorful & smooth sea glass
Most of my sea glass originates in either In St. Mary's County or Cecil County.

In St. Mary's County, the glass I find is a bit more worn and frosted than what I find in the Northeast River simply because the Chesapeake Bay is salty and rough.  In Cecil County, there is little salinity and the waves are less ferocious.

On the Bay, the waves can be ocean-like and the glass is pounded on the rocks and sand for many years.  The sea glass drops in St. Mary's are more gem-like and worn although there are times when I find embossed pieces with raised words and patterns.  The intact pieces allow me to date much of the glass I find to the late 1800s and early 1900s.  I also find many pieces of sea pottery, which is also very beautiful.

St. Mary's County was settled in 1634 and the Bay was heavily traveled.  Many of my glass pieces are very old and tell a story; especially the earthen-ware and pottery.  An added bonus -- I find large, fossilized shark teeth along with plentiful arrowheads!

Northeast River Sea Glass

Glass Bottle Stoppers
Sea glass bottle stoppers found preserved in the mud -- one says "Lea & Perrins" The lavender glass is the bottom of a beer mug from the 1800s.
In Cecil County, the Northeast River softens the glass edges and frosts the surface ever so slightly because the waves are not as strong as those in the Chesapeake Bay and there is little salinity to the water.  This type of glass is often called river glass or antique beach glass.

Occasionally after storms, I find a whole bottle or bottle stopper -- torpedo bottles that once held soda on ships, thick black glass beer bottles, and small, thin-necked whiskey bottles. Beach glass embossing and decorations are often preserved and I use the trademarks and words to identify the manufacturer, location and age of the piece.

The glassware, dishes and pottery I find were tossed from the end of the pier of a former hunting lodge pictured below. If a beer mug or plate broke, it was tossed off the end of the pier with the other glass refuse.  The items found in Cecil County are dated in the mid to late 1800s.
